Overview
Lingo ("we", "our", or "us") is an AI-powered keyboard extension for iOS. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use the Lingo app and keyboard extension.
We are committed to minimizing data collection. Lingo does not require an account, does not collect your name or email address, and does not sell your data to third parties.
Information We Collect
Device Identifier
We generate a random UUID the first time you open Lingo and store it locally on your device using Shared App Group storage. This identifier is used solely to track anonymous usage quotas (free-tier limits) and is never linked to your identity.
Text You Submit
When you tap the Lingo sparkle button in the keyboard, the selected text is sent to our API server for AI processing (rephrasing or translation). This text is:
- Transmitted over HTTPS (encrypted in transit)
- Processed by a third-party Large Language Model (LLM) provider
- Not stored on our servers after the response is returned
- Not used to train AI models
Important: Do not submit passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive personal data through the keyboard AI feature.
Anonymous Usage Statistics
We log the following per request for rate-limiting and service monitoring purposes:
- Anonymized device ID (UUID)
- Tone selection (e.g., "formal", "casual")
- Target language (if translation is enabled)
- Detected source language
- Request timestamp and response latency
- Token counts (for billing/cost tracking)
This data does not include the actual text content you submitted.
In-App Purchase Data
Subscription purchases (Pro plans) are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store your payment information. We receive only a transaction receipt to verify your Pro status.
How We Use Your Information
- Provide the service: Process your rephrase and translation requests
- Enforce free-tier limits: Track daily usage per anonymous device ID
- Detect abuse: Identify and block misuse of the API
- Improve reliability: Monitor latency and error rates
- Verify Pro status: Validate App Store receipts for paid subscribers
Third-Party Services
Google Gemini API
We use Google's Gemini AI model to process rephrase and translation requests. Text you submit is sent to Google's servers for processing. Google's use of this data is governed by their Privacy Policy and their API terms. We have configured our API integration to opt out of data usage for model training where applicable.
Cloudflare
Our API is hosted on Cloudflare Workers. Cloudflare may process request metadata (IP addresses, timestamps) as part of their infrastructure. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
Apple App Store
In-app purchases and subscription management are handled by Apple. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
Data Retention
- Text content: Not retained — discarded immediately after the AI response is returned
- Usage logs: Retained for up to 90 days for rate-limiting and abuse prevention, then automatically deleted
- Device IDs: Retained while your account is active; deleted upon request
- Translation history: Stored locally on your device only, never uploaded to our servers
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: Request a copy of data associated with your anonymous device ID
- Delete: Request deletion of your usage data and device ID from our servers
- Opt out: Stop using the app at any time; your device ID will expire after 90 days of inactivity
To exercise these rights, contact us at support@lingo-app.com with your device ID (found in Lingo → Settings → About).
Children's Privacy
Lingo is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
"Allow Full Access" Permission
Lingo requires the "Allow Full Access" keyboard permission to make network requests to our AI API. Without this permission, the AI rephrase and translation features will not work. This permission does not give Lingo access to anything you type in other apps — it is required by iOS for any keyboard extension that makes network connections.
Lingo does not log, store, or transmit keystrokes from your general keyboard usage. AI processing only occurs when you explicitly tap the Lingo sparkle button.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the date at the top of this page. Continued use of Lingo after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
